Job Description

Assistant Professor (Marine Biologist)

The School of Life Sciences at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa seeks a candidate for an Assistant Professor of Marine Biology position who uses integrative ecological or evolutionary approaches to investigate the biological and environmental processes shaping marine populations, communities, and/or ecosystems in marine settings, spanning multiple biological, spatial, and/or temporal scales. Candidates employing research that applies biocultural frameworks with a focus on Hawaiian species—for example limu (algae), cryptofauna, or fish—and/or capable of offering field-based courses are of particular interest.

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa is a Carnegie Research 1 University with strong emphases on research and undergraduate and graduate education. Our campus welcomes all students but given our responsibilities to the community in which we operate, as part of our strategic mission, we strive to become a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning, a place that is committed to integrating Native Hawaiian language, culture and/or values into its academic and campus environment. Our vision is to be locally and globally recognized as a premier student-centered and community-serving university. The School of Life Sciences hosts the largest academic program on the University of Hawai'i's flagship campus, serving over 1,500 undergraduate majors and 150 graduate students for degrees in biology, botany, marine biology, microbiology, molecular cell biology, and zoology. Research interests of the 40 faculty members span all biological scales, with many focusing on ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. The School of Life Sciences is committed to serving our community and state, and to excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate can have research experience in any area of marine biology, including but not limited to physiological, ecological, and/or evolutionary research, using a variety of field, laboratory, experimental, computational, and/or modeling approaches.

  3. Excellence and creativity in research, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  4. Ability to teach and mentor diverse students in core classes in the Marine Biology major, such as algal diversity, invertebrate biology, fish biology, marine microbiology, or an advanced capstone course, among others
  5. Commitment to supporting the key principles of the School of Life Sciences, which are inclusiveness, personal and professional integrity, and the pursuit of excellence in instruction and research

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Postdoctoral research experience
  2. Evidence of external research funding
  3. Demonstrated experience and excellence in instruction of undergraduate and graduate students in the life sciences, with an emphasis on marine biology
  4. Prior experience teaching a field course, especially in marine ecosystems
  5. Experience working with diverse student and community populations
  6. Experience with research grounded in bio-cultural frameworks, especially in Hawaii
  7. Research that builds on existing strengths within the School of Life Sciences
  8. Vision of research that draws on Hawaii's unique location, resources, and faculty expertise in the School of Life Sciences, other university units, and state and federal agencies engaged in marine research
